Visit Chalfont St Giles
The main attraction of Chalfont St Giles is Milton's cottage though the village itself is an attractive one with some lovely houses scattered throughout.
Milton's cottage is a really charming building built in the red brick common to this area. It is a grade 1 listed 16th cnetury cottage and also has a lovely cottage garden that you can explore as part of your visit.
Milton's cottage is the only home of John Milton, one of England's most famous poets, still in existence. Milton moved to Chalfont St Giles in 1665 to escape from the plague which was ravaging London at the time. Whilst living in the cottage he completed his epic poem 'Paradise Lost'.
Entering Milton's cottage you can see not only early copies of 'Paradise Lost' and 'Paradise Regained' but also learn of Milton's work as a great Parliamentarian who founded many of the ideas that still serve in modern society.
