Visit Bigbury on Sea
Bigbury is a village to the south-east of Plymouth, and in the western part of the South Devon AONB. Bigbury on Sea is a few kilometres to the south - by the sea!
Bigbury itself is a quiet village which has a pub and limited facilities, and some attractive thatched cottages.
Its sea facing southern neighbour attracts all the attention and has slightly more facilities.
Visit Bigbury on Sea
Bigbury on Sea is best known for the beach, which is the largest on the south Devon coastline and very popular with both families and surfers, locals and holidaymakers.
(Note: there is a large (paying) car park so you shouldn't have difficulty getting on to the beach.)
The island that stands just off the coast from Bigbury on Sea is called Burgh Island (the photo below was taken from Burgh Island). It is tidal - that is, can only be reached on foot at low tide - although a curious high sided vehicle called a sea tractor can transport people at other times. The island has a pub, a hotel, and a sprinkling of houses, and is a pleasant stroll across the beach from Bigbury on Sea (when the tide is out) and a fun ride at other times.
Historical note: the town has strong links with Agatha Christie, especially the Art Deco hotel on Burgh Island, which has also played host to various other dignitaries such as the Beatles, who were hoping the high tide would keep their fans at bay!
