Summer is the perfect opportunity to take a weekend break and explore England. The north of England is home to many of most beautiful and interesting destinations that are perfect for weekend breaks. The Peak District, Liverpool, York, Newcastle and the Northumberland National Park all call the north home and illustrate the vast array of unique locations you can find in northern England.

The Peak District is a wonderful escape all year round but as with most places particularly delightful in the spring and summer. Easier walking trails are abundant and bringing a picnic is always a good idea. Activity expeditions are also available so if you fancy rock climbing, abseiling, mountain biking and gorge scrambling then you should definitely consider this option.

A short drive west of the Peak District you will find England’s cultural capital, Liverpool. Being the hometown of the Beatles is only one of Liverpool’s many attractive attributes and the city is also home to more listed buildings, theatres, museums and galleries than anywhere else in England, bar London. Liverpool’s most popular attraction is The Beatles Story Museum with millions of fans making their way to the city to experience the cultural phenomenon that was The Beatles for themselves. All this, coupled with a vibrant nightlife, makes Liverpool one of England’s most popular destinations.

If you would rather spend your weekend break away from the hustle and bustle of city life then another great destination would be Northumberland National Park. One of England’s most idyllic locations, the dramatic hills and valleys stretches all the way from Hadrian’s Wall to the Scottish border. Wildlife is vibrant all year round, birdlife is particularly abundant. Spend the weekend camping out under the stars or if you prefer the finer things you can even stay in a castle. All that is certain is that you will return from your weekend break feeling refreshed and inspired to explore England’s countryside on your next break too.

The countryside isn’t everyone’s cup of tea and if instead you would like to spend you weekend break blowing off some steam then Newcastle is probably the destination for you. Summer time is ideal  to visit as the city’s stylish waterfront is a sight to behold. However, with a mix of both fun and culture you are sure to have a good time no matter what time of year you visit. Well suited to a younger crowd, a weekend break in Newcastle would include a sojourn into the party culture of this university city with The Bacchus on High Bridge being a particularly fun spot to either start or end your night. The Bodega is another celebrated hotspot and is good place to have a drink during a day taking in nearby St James’ Park.
